Hi all. I hope everyone is well! You may have noticed that MCDGS has been offline for some time. This was due to a failure with our server. I'm still unsure what actually caused the problem in the first place, but the main thing is we're back online.

If you have any problems with the site, likely a cause of the recent errors, please let me know! I hope to see everyone around again soon. Have a great summer!

Donations and the future of MCDGS ArtGate.

I have been considering for some time the possibility of taking donations. I've always liked to be able to provide this web site free of money issues. No advertising, no donations. Mark Lundie and myself have funded the website for 4 years, however with recent higher activity, not as much weight in our pockets, and our useage levels expecting an increase the site will become more costly. For a large group of members the cost of this web site is minimal, however it's starting to slowly burn small tea bag size holes in my pocket - which will slowly increase in size...

At this stage in the development of the web site I need to ask a few questions. Is this web site worth the development money and time invested? I've recently started a web development company to fund me and this site a little more, however the large problem being I have less time. I have been e-mailing around programming communities hoping to lighten the load on myself time wise (and experience wise) and I would like to ask you, as fellow members to help lighten the load money wise.

I believe this would work by increasing useage of the web site at the same time, giving us more users willing to help develop the site into something extremely exciting!

On that side of thinking, I myself am an artist. So throughout all this work, I'm still trying to learn to draw, and animate. I personally feel that this community has played a huge role in my development as an artist throughout the years and I would love to see it play that role for more to come - but I feel I need to focus more on my art. My ability to develop the site is limited to a month (solid 18/7 with a few days off =p) every summer currently. I would like to stress that if donnations are given, the actual development of the site may not increase largely until we find a programming team. It occurred to be recently that this perhaps may be our web sites downfall.

The website is currently costing £260 per year to run, which allows us with a large enough server to develop and test the site. Even partial help from the community would go a long way (small donations per month/year from each member would cover most of the cost), and I would like to know what your thoughts are, if you have any questions and whether you feel this is a site worth supporting? Please be honest in your opinions.

Thank you.

Kind Regards,
Michael Lundie [Lead Admin]

PS: ArtGate is the propsed new name and development plan for MCDGS Networks as it is now called. Feel free to ask any questions regarding this also.

My word! Michael (aka Mongoose) has just singed his nasal hair sniffing a candle. Not just any candle mind, but a coffee scented one. (no prizes for guessing who it belongs to) I felt that this incident had to be shared with all!
Take care everyone and don't go sniffing any candles to closely.

Indecisive recently brought it to my attention that he couldn't see any Avatars apart from his own. I looked into the problem (also thanks to Indecisive and Furniture Chris for troubleshooting assistance) and it appeared that only Moderators and Admins were able to see avatars. I fixed this error yesterday and all forum members should be able to see avatars now.

Thanks to Indecisive for reporting the bug! If anybody comes accross any other problems please don't hesitate to let me know. Thank you.

The blog system has undergone an update to use thumbnail images. There is a few things that need sorted out yet however. We will eventually be integrating the 'lightbox' viewer into the blog system. (You can see the lightbox viewer in use on the artist of the month profile and in a few other place.)

I'm also interested in using a mod for our blog system called 'Media Manager'. This may proove a good step towards the sketch blog program we are aiming for. The mod is very buggy, but it is superb. It will be worth investing time in to continue developing where it was left off. This will be due to start development mid December.

Have a look if your interested:

The web upload system has maufunctioned and will remain offline until further notice. I'm not yet sure how this has happened and I certainly have not come accross the problem before. We have made some updates to it for use with the new 'soundsketch' system, but it does not appear to be this that is effecting it.

As always though, I have a plan! I'll hopefully have us back up and running tomorrow. For those that use photobucket to display images, these will still work fine! I'll keep everyone posted. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Take care.

Just to let everyone know that I'll be in London until Monday. I won't have an internet connection, so hold tight until then if any major problems come up! (which is unlikely) I'll be back up in Scotland for 10 days and there will be some updates the first week including our first Artist of the Month profile - something to look forward too! (Expect a sketchgroup in Dundee) After that, I'll be back to Manchester for a month. (More sketchgroups I hear?!)

Good luck to everyone, enjoy your holidays (if your on break) and happy arting!

Everything is up and running just now though, minus the left hand column! I will fix the bugs tomorrow as it's 2am and I must sleep!
Ubertango

If any of you had noticed, there's been a little addition to the MCDGSNetworks dynamic. Namely myself and Mongoose have been tinkering and duct taping the Realms of Metaphor and Ubertango, right here onto your very doorstep!

A few terms you might see floating around are DoaM, which stands for Death of a Metaphor and is the current individual project I'm currently working on. I'm using my site Ubertango.com which is hosted kindly by MCDGS, as a development goto point as well as a personal gallery. For a better understanding, I shall be explaining in more depth in the forums. So any questions are welcome there.

Another is Ubertango, which is a random word I've used for the site and previous projects that you may well remember. What this means is, there is a section on the portal dedicated to ubertango which can be found here which is currently under construction by myself, additional help by Mongoose.

There is also a section on the forum dedicated to the Ubertango/DoaM project, and we would appreciate anyone to come by and say 'ello. Another feature is the Ubertango Usergroup which is available to you, and this will in theory allow you to receive nice things (previews of artwork, comics, media and up to date info on DoaM) in times to come. So to all of you, I wish you well and hope to see you around the forums,
